Aaah, that explains it. The confusing issue was of course there were several, not just the Police station. Maybe a general term for municipal buildings?
Yes I was thinking of those cavities about the size of bullets. I spent a semester of middle school in Germany, went to visit my grand father in Berlin (before the wall came down) and most if not all of the older buildings were riddled with bullet holes.
Hotel de Ville is the City Hall.
Gendarme Station is Gendarmerie.

As for WW2 signs on the building not likely. This area wasn't on the main axes of battle in 1944.
Even in Normandy it is hard to find anything on the buildings.
