Taken in 1984 on Coney Island. I've been revisiting older work lately. This is a scan from a negative, it was printed on Ilford Galerie graded paper at the time, but it might be interesting to reprint some of these. Admittedly, I wasn't a particularly good technician, and some of those old prints have fixer stains.
It's interesting how close the value of the sea lion is to the rock it leans against. My first thought was it was a pup leaning against its mom. Btw, can you imagine trying to print a 35 year old digital file now? Not so much! lol!
Oops! I've edited the title from "Sea Lion" to "Walrus" with apologies to all the Walruses! Or is it Walri? Clearly, I need to brush up on my sea mammals!
John, as I recall, the color of this "rock" was almost the same as the walrus. If I were to make this picture today, I'd probably do this later in the day when the light is better, but I remember thinking the texture of the background camouflaged these amazing creatures very well, but my interest at the time was with his wonderful gesture.
