I think you succeeded. I have tried a pretty much similar approach (including the stark overprinting, bleaching back and toning) sometime ago as well. Although it is rather difficult to control, it can lead to some nice results, a bit reminiscent of lith printing.

Oh yeah, it works all right. Very graphic in the extreme contrast between branches and leaves. It looks much like a really well done bromoil print, where I think you boiled down the content of the photograph to its pure essence.
