Unusual Bridge Near Poteau, OK.

This bridge does not resemble other Pratt truss style bridges found in Eastern Oklahoma. It is on what appears to have been a county road, south of Poteau, Oklahoma, in LeFlore County. I did some inquiries about this bridge, and one person who is knowledgeable says it is a former Railroad Bridge. Now the railroad never went this way, so that would mean that at some time this bridge was moved into this location. It appears to be from the 1910's period or earlier, as it is quite lightweight for a railroad bridge. Not visible in this photo, the piers are much newer in design than the bridge. Sporting an almost new wooden deck and running boards, this bridge has fencing that goes completely thru the bridge, and right in the middle of the bridge is a gate that can be closed and locked. It would seem to indicate from this that while this "was" a county road, perhaps now this is a private road. There were no "no trespassing" signs to be seen, though.

Nice bridge... but I REALLY like the line in the foreground, the sharp distinction between dirt and deck... And the deck itself, with its horizontals and verticals. To my eye the steel itself is somewhat lost among the trees.

Boy I need to go find this one, thanks for posting.

There used to be some real amazing truss style bridges across the Washita River and back in around Ardmore, Oklahoma. Check with the readers of Butch Bridge's newsletter at http://www.oklahomahistory.net/ and you can probably be pointed right to some fairly obscure bridges; like the one near Davis, Oklahoma that was in the movie, "Dillinger".
