This image, I think, is filled with forboding because of the intrusive dark shadows. It is not pleasant, to my eye; perhaps too profound. An outstanding photograph.
Thanks, I like to bring shadows from outside the frame to give that unsettling feeling. Likely I picked that up from films like The Third Man. Although my real influence for all things creepy is a Lovecraft short story called The Blasted Heath. That was made into a film with little relation to the story called Die Monster, Die. I was fortunate enough to make another one in this vain a while back:
If anyone is familiar with The Blasted Heath, think of those shadows as a two dimensional analogy to the alien possessed trees stretching their limbs into the sky in a vain attempt to get home.
