Untitled 4

An informal portrait (but not quite candid) while he was scanning the horizon for his flock of 'gimmer' lambs. Pity the foreground stones on the wall are not quite in focus. This was very useful exercise for me in undertaking a sort of social documentary project. Lots of lessons learnt on how to work quickly with subjects, including how much film you can get through in 30 minutes!

Fantastic portrait! I don't care about the out of focus rocks, this really is outstanding. Great work!

If the rock bugs you, you can always crop it. It increases the strentgh of the portrait I think. Sly

I would think the cropping of the very light coloured rocks in the foreground would put the centre of focus back to your main subject.

Looks like you have some lovely grain there.

Mick.

Only two things matter here focus wise. His face and to a slighly lesser extent his muscled hairy arms which say: This man is used to hard outdoor work. A Dalesman and son of the soil. You've got both of these right.

There's a Bill Brandt darkness here which suits the subject.

I like it a lot. I hope the Dalesman gets a copy

Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment on my images. Very much appreciated for their warm and positive views. The heavy contrast and grainy quality was something I deliberately went after with the use of pushed HP5 and Microphen and I was very pleased with the results. Certainly I am a big fan of the drama in Brandt's work and this was something I was trying to capture here.

Again, many thanks.

Graham
