two Versions

two Versions

This is another one of my rainy day experiments. I wonder which version you'd prefer or like them at all.
The picture is made during heavy rain giving a very low contrast in the scene. The left version is a straight print printed at grade 2.5. The correct exposure should have made it about nearly one stop darker. But this would have given the scene a somewhat depressive mood, more than it actually was. The right version is a straight print at grade 5.

How about a happy medium doing some split grade printing? That way you can dodge and burn various parts of the image to get that lovely soft gradation in the highlights, but with some punch in the middle and low values.
If I had to pick between these two, I'd pick the soft one.

If it was my print to make, I would focus on the light atop the mountains, and some of the light on the water. Heavy burning around the top and bottom with a soft grade 2 filter or so. Then I would add some burning on the left with a grade 3-3.5 or so and a touch on the big mountain to the right. Save a spot of the water in the middle, probably oval shaped that's brighter. Let the light coming from behind the mountains have a place to anchor. Then when done I'd likely lightly bleach it in and sepia tone it to give some glow to the highlights. I would print it on warmtone paper, probably Ilford.

There would seem to be a bit more to be done with it, but as a starting point, I like the G5 version.

Thomas,
which one do you like, I agree with you on split grade printing, but which one do you like. I like the explanation, very easy to follow. good job.
For me I would expose for the highlights and grade select and develop for the shadows. Then dodge and burn as Thomas said and if necessary selective bleaching for more control.

Oh i like #2

Sometimes the best efforts of a photographer in the darkroom fails to to produce a worthwhile print. Looking at both your prints I feel that your neg. falls into this area. By all means do your best in the darkroom to rescue this neg. - it's all a learning experience. For the record I would try a split-grade print with filters 0 & 5.
Good luck in your endeavours.

Thank you all so far. If I did count it right, it's 4 to 3 to the contrasty side  As to my own preferences: Side by side to me the right variant seems to be more appealing at first sight, but I like the left one more for reasons I can't tell for sure. May be it reflects more of my memories.
I think, I will try in the direction Thomas suggested. It will take some time but I will show you the result.
