Two Anorexics do not make one healthy individual

While shooting an obviously anorexic model, I pulled out my 6x7 and shot a couple shots on my expired 70mm film, this one, a double exposure done purposefully (though hand held so instead of her looking two different ways but the scene keeping the same, I got everything a little shaky).

EDIT: Because no one understands me... I want to explain that this is not the image I would choose to use in a printed version of my work, because this is the internet, I don't want someone saving and reposing on a public forum the clear image where you can see both the nudity and the thin nature of my subject. To protect her, I chose this image to show to you. You'll just have to imagine what a clear image might look like.
Location
Bridgeport, CT, USA
Equipment Used
Mamiya RZ67, Probably 90m Lens, 70mm back, (Sadly I have to admit at the time I didn't own a light meter that would meter strobes so I cheated with my digital then re-calculated for the expired film EI).

f/11ish and 1/100
Film & Developer
GAF 70mm Aerial Film Expired 1967 in Ilfsol 3
Paper & Developer
EpsonScan - some slight post process exposure adjustment was done, ANR Glass for 120 used to flatten, caused lines.

  1. Yes
This is a really interesting image and a little bit unsettling. Visual metaphors abound but (IMO) the title doesn't elicit any empathy with the subject

If you've seen Stone's previous thread about how stupid a model was, you'll know that respect and empathy with his female models is sometimes lacking.Titles and empathy aside, the hand on the belly of this undernourished young woman is very poignant, reminiscent of images of Victorian waifs.

Wow sly, kind if a harsh statement considering I was the one defending the girl when others were calling her stupid I tried to explain how she just had no exposure to film at her age, I wouldn't at all say I'm unsympathetic...As far as this model, I check in with her and she has made progress getting better, I do care, but the fact is she wanted to shoot with me and I wasn't going to say no, every day is an opportunity and this one was unique, unsettling, and raw truth, this is our world, you can't bury your head in the sand and pretend she doesn't exist. Perhaps my image will inspire others who see it to notice more and say something if they see this in others. I didn't make her condition look glamorous or try to hide it, I highlighted the pain and anguish to be sure no one saw it and confused it with beautiful or healthy.

I did say this photo is poignant. Hardly a critisism. I wrote a long answer, but this wasn't the right spot for it.

hi stone,

i hope the model signed a release for you .
being posted in a public forum and isn't it kind of harsh
labeling / referring to her as obviously an "anorexic model " and all that ...

i'm not really sure what the shock value of this is though.
she's a thin woman double exposed in a basement boiler room ..

kind of reminds me of an 80s album cover except for the
headachy double exposure ...

Yes model releases signed Althogh I have very obvious clear images of her rib cage etc, I chose this image not for artistic quality and more because its actually hard to see her physical body, as a way to protect her, if you saw a clear image you would be more shocked. Or not. But I chose this to be more protective of judgement over her, there are certainly more obvious photos.I also agree it is a bit dizzying.

I like the photo and like whatever message may be expressed by it but think you could be slightly more gracious in your description of a person.

I'm not sure what you're trying to convey with this photo, but I do admire your model's courage in posing for you. Anorexics have issues with body image, and her willingness to confront this shows a lot of guts. I do hope her work with you helps her in her struggle with her condition.
