Road construction really is the biggest scam going. A 2 week job seems to take 6 months...maybe because workers show up for a few days and then are gone for a month. Anyway might as well make the most of it.
I metered off of the ambient daylight. That's all that matters - I don't care about the inside of the tube because it's in the dark, it's supposed to be darker. Lucky in that it was overcast, so bright and soft lighting overall.
Thanks Colin. Yes it is dark inside the tube but nothing like as dark as I had expected it to be and yet the outside scene isn't blown either. It was this "squaring the circle" that you achieved that I wondered about. I once took a wedding shot of the bride's father giving his speech and he was against a window with the summer's light and while he came out fine, the outside scene which was the equivalent of outside of your tube was blown but yours is not.
Maybe if I had risked a shorter exposure of the inside of the room where the bride's father was, I might have been able to "square my circle" better than I did. He'd have been darker but still OK and the outside would not have been blown - maybe
This has worked very well. I like this type of shot but when I do it the bright scene is well exposed and the dark bit is well under which requires a complicated dodge or burn. I actually did something similar very recently but I haven't printed it yet. Perhaps there is not too much dynamic range in this shot and the inside of the pipe was relatively bright?
