thanks Keith, your point is very well taken. I typically print at sizes larger than my scanner. I don't do partial scans and stitching so I do a "raw" scan of my pyro stained negs in color mode which gives both the color and the digital artifact. I suppose I could instead of wasting time re-scanning and trying to get rid of the artifact, make a smaller print to present here. I'll consider that. Or I guess I could take a digital picture of the hanging print.... we'll see
Miles, you shouldn't get that artifact at all. I scan pyro negs all the time and don't see it. Maybe you have ICE turned on? Offhand I suspect that is the issue, because the artifacts are in the thickest portions of your negs and where the tone gradients are largest. ICE won't work properly with pyro negs, especially in those cases. There is still silver in a pyro neg and that causes the same probs with ICE that you get with 'normal' b&w negs. Maybe that's the issue. Anyway I scan pyros in b&w or colour and, as long as dustoff/ICE are switched off... no artifacts at all. Apart from that, if scanning to raw doesn't work, why not try TIF.
I just hate to see lovely images with artifacts on them!
Keith, I agree about the artifacts. I get very nice high resolution scans of mf and 4X5 negatives with the software I use for making digital negatives for alt. processes. Unfortunately I used a quick and dirty auto-everything approach to these jpg scans. I should have taken a little more time to do it correctly, again, my bad... I truly appreciate your comments. They will certainly serve to "keep me on my toes" to ward off sloppy techniques. btw if they dry early enough I'll post the smaller prints this p.m., they certainly look better than the scanned negs.
