I took a frame-filling negative of the same tree whose image I posted a few days ago. There is no comparative scale, so it is hard to guess its size. These three are estimated to be over 2,000 years old
'Easy to see how the native lore wrapped around their not being pretty. Its nice to get a closer look.
The bristlecone pine is (at least one of) the ancients up here. They aren't the prettiest either. But there's something about any organism that lives that long. I enjoyed the personification of ancient trees in Lord of the Rings for that reason. Thank you for posting, Peter.
Thank you H2S & Tony ! There is an interesting book called Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time by Beth Moon. All B&W portraits of ... you guessed it ... ancient trees. I found a few I've had the good fortune to see - in person, and many I'd love to see.
I have a wishlist of places to visit - all linked to bizarre trees: Socotra, Madagascar, the California coast, Namibia and Queensland. As you said, they are just amazing organisms.
