Tony, I only use a 50mm f1.8 at the moment in a deliberate attempt to force me to 'see' (actually because I cant afford any other lenses  )

I've been attracted to many of your images, Phill, and I like your "eye"-- that is, what interests you in the world, the things you take the time to photograph.

While there is much I like about the image, especially the pointilistic patchwork of light and dark leaves in the background and the wonderful texture of the tree trunks, in the end, I find that I'm turned off by the overwhelming uniformity of the mid-dark grey of those very same tree trunks. It makes your main subject seem dull and lifeless. What would have made this image sing in my opinion would be one or two sunlit spots on the trunks. So the next time you are out in the woods, ask the powers to throw a little light on your subject! ;-)

Somehow I'm not quite satisfied with where I left my previous post....

What I'm trying to say is that I think this photo is really close to being great (heck, even the composition is balanced and interesting), but that the lack of light dynamics on the main subject undermines everything else. Perhaps some dodging might help even some selective increase in contrast, but I suspect that lack any highlight on the main subject can't be made up for...

Well anyway, I hope some of this feedback might be useful for future image making, FWIW...
