Tree: Late Winter Dawn 2006

Tree: Late Winter Dawn 2006

I'm interested in _any_ suggestions for improvement. In particular I'm concerned that with my "Lake Tree" project I'm getting stuck in a conventionaly beautiful "coffee-table book" landscape mode.

I am obessed with my trees. I am in love with my trees, and I want my images to go deeper... but I'm not sure where to go next. For lack of anything else I thought I might try working with a Holga, or I might try close-up shots looking up or down the trunk. Anybody seen some compelling tree photography recently?

I love those subtle colours.

This is great with those subtle cool tones. You could maybe try cropping some from the bottom of the image and I feel that the photo leans a little to the right, you could try straightening that.

Oh, forgot to mention that I recently bought a smallbook called Magnum- Trees. It's just that, tree photos by a variety of Magnum photographers and a great inspiration. I will be posting a couple of tree photos in the next few days as it is a subject that I'm keen on as well.
Cheers, Tony

Johnathon,

I am responding on the basis of your question. If you are looking to alternative presentations, you might want to study the work of oriental artists. Particularly where they use a smaller dominant componant to balance the greater sense of emptiness in images.

Thanks, Tony, for pointing out the horizon tilt. I'm pretty much always working on a leveled tripod, so I usually assume it's not a consideration. The tripod must have shifted in the sand.

As for the crop I looked at one with less water constantly over the course of yesterday, and I was almost conviced that it might be better, but each time I came back to it the more water crop won. (Which is the same reaction my girlfriend had.) So I've fixed the tilt and re-uped a crop tht is similar to the one I had.

I'm definitely going to find that Magnum book. Thanks for all your tips; you gave me much food for thought!

I'm intrigued by your suggestion Donald, and I can think of some Japanese prints (Hirosaige sp?) that I saw at Boston's MFA many years back. Do you have any specific artistists in mind?
