Travler's Rest

Another sign along 1st Street, south of Downtown San Jose. Unfortunately, there was a woman who decided to stay just in front of my camera the whole time I was there. With some rise and a crop, she is gone.

I need to attack this from the other side, though. I think I can get a shot with much less background clutter. Also, if I remember my loupe next time, I might get a better focus!

Matt these signs are great subjects. I wouldn't be worried about the surronding crap, but would worry about integrating it. You might also watch to see when they turn the lights on. If they go on whilst theres still some light you could have a real winner. A detail of that hole with just enough of the sorronding sign in frame to hint at what it is would also be cool. The subjects have real potential.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. The idea of just using enough of the sign to give a hint at the total is pretty much the signature of my buddy Terry: http://thompsonpaintings.com/gallery2.html/

I am fascinated by these old signs. They represent the era of when I was growing up. Matt

Matt, signs like these are the end of an interesting era. Somehow, the illuminated molded plastic signs of the current era (and all the processed food they represent) fail to capture the magic of this bygone era. I am looking forward to your next treatment of this subject.
