Train Trucks / Split Grade

4x5 silver contact print.

I just picked up a dichro enlarger and decided to try my hand at split grade printing. I wanted to eliminate the enlarging variable for my first attempt so I printed this, which I was never able to get right on graded paper. I'm not sure whether or not the scan reflects it, but there is a nice amount of shadow and highlight detail I wasn't able to achieve before. You can even read the chalk writing in the highlights of the image. Needless to say, I'm rather excited about this technique.

Looking at this reopened JPG, it's lost much of the detail I was describing... yeah digital.

Shawn,
One thing I do when I split grade print. I always use a full sheet of paper. I know it is more expensive, but I find so much more info right off the bat. IF it falls into place (which doesn't happen but 20% of the time) I will only use three pieces of paper. Only time I do use pieces instead of full sheets is in 16x20 and 20x24. But if I know that the 16x20 is a ggod pic I will use full sheets there to. Next you need a RH Design stop clock timer. This could be the most important piece of darkroom equipment I own.

Thanks, fellows!
Mike, that's good advice. I never make strips, I just use full sheets weather I'm making my 8x10 contact prints on graded paper or little enlargements with VC. As you say, you can learn so much more with a full sheet that it's definitely worth it. I'm using a metronome right now and it works just fine for my needs. I'd rather spend the money on paper. Thanks again. Best. Shawn

Just took a break from enlarging a night shot and read this. Thanks! I'm really loving this technique. I use it exclusivly for enlargments and VC paper in general now. I still love my Kentona when the negs fits though....
