really, really dig this. can you comment on how/why the rock(s) in the middle of the image are darker/more contrasty than those on either side of it?

Thanks a lot both! Oolalajp, if I remember correctly, the rock in the middle is closer to the camera. There was a snow storm going on (you can't see the flakes because the wind was strong) so the rocks in the background are in a kind of snow haze, plus they were getting covered in snow.
