toned Kallitype
Wolfgang Moersch

toned Kallitype

This Kallitype was too dark (about 30% overexposed)

steps to rescue

1. bleached 1+100 1 min and fixed again to reduce density, the print was still too dark and soft
2. bleached again 1+50 1 min and toned with thiourea (MT3 with a just small amount of alkali - 50+15+1000ml) to lighten the highlights and upper midtones
3. MT7 Iron Blue 5+5+5+15+5+1000ml 90 secs - resulting hue yellow and green
4. weak solution of ammonia to achieve a cooler tone

Wow this is very beautiful Wolfgang! I often wonder what the masters do when they have a print they've invested their time in that isn't perfect. I try to rescue everything too but I am just learning. I like the way you share this knowledge with us, God bless you!!!

Brilliant and inspiring! Thanks for sharing the hard work you put into such a grand print.

Perfect print treatment!

It would have been interesting to see what the Kallitype looked like before you saved it...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one, Wolfgang...

What size is this print? Is it a contact print from the original neg or have you enlarged it?

Lovely. I love how you wrestle with it until you get what you like
