I shot this on the afternoon of my last day of a seven day trip to death valley. I almost didn't take the drive through titus canyon but it turned out to be one of my favorite spots. I was fortunate to have dramatic sky's a couple of the days that I was out there.
Nice shot. My kind of sky or at least the kind I like to attain but rarely do. For reasons I cannot put my finger on, I cannot work out why I see both a vast expanse of country and sky and almost a table top model in which it has been faked. It's a bit like the best table top shots of an airfield and aircraft which turns out to be a model but looks so real.
Somehow the rocks look to be within touching distance.
It is probably the lack of atmospheric distance. Our brains use atmospheric haze, and the way the haze tends to make things far away seem lighter and have lower contrast, to create the sense of distance.
In this particular image, the darkness and high contrast of the sky, as well as the darker landscape just below the sky, pulls the distance visually closer to us. This tends to emphazise the two-dimentionality of the print. Not necessarily a bad thing, but something to consider when constructing the image. I think it works well for this image because it creates a tension within the image -- a feeling that something is not quite right in the world. That this is not a friendly comfortable place.
