One of those photos, I swore I would never do...useless stuff laying on the side of the road (stream in this case)...but I happened on it while shooting a millrace and couldn't resist.
The image was cropped square in PS. It was lightened to more closely resemble the print. No other modifications. Oh, yeah... the artifacts at the top of the print are from the scanner glass, not the print. Thoughts?
I did a shot similar to this one; mine was a stump in the water. I'll give you the same critique (I found it very helpful) that a fellow "Apuger" gave me... The real interest in this picture is the mangled tin can... you should have gotten closer to capture more of the detail... Unfortunately, this is a 35mm, and enlarger cropping will probably breakup the image...
You're probably right. But getting closer woould have required me to be pretty much prone, which would alos have necessitated my getting wet. The shot was not important enough for that much sacrifice...
a t.l.r. would have come in handy there...and given me a bigger negative...
I'm not entirely happy with the dof either. But with the filter on, I really had to open it up to get the shot.
Well Joe my man... we have a tremendous burden on us as photographers... we sometimes gotta get wet to get the shot!!! But, I bet you knew this when you shot it... sometimes we already know the answers to our condrums... Once I had a great shot set up then realized that I had to get closer... Problem was, I had to walk out into a muddy reservoir... I said,,, "hey, if that's what it takes, then darn it... that's what I'll do... I grabbed that trusty Bogen 3030 with my Hassy on it and trudged 20 feet into the muddy water... I set up and fired the cable release. I had become stuck and had a hell of time getting out... I got home developed the film and I was at least a stop over exposed... I checked my trust Zone VI modified spot meter only to find that I had some how bumped the dial and I was a stop and half overexposed... thus left with an unprintable negative... so, in the words of a great philosopher.... go figure!!!!
If this had been the falls shot that I was working on in PA, I'da been right out there doin' what it takes....
But this was a tin can as the subject of a shot that I really thought that I would never really do...My demeanor, at the time, was "oh, what the hell!". So, I metered, figured, set, squatted down as best I could, and fired.
I'm hoping NC, in a couple of weeks, will offer a few more opportunities to "get wet", figuratively speaking, of course.
