The Monocacy Viaduct from the West, 8:30 AM

a view of the Monocacy Viaduct on the C&O Canal.

Again, more playing with the 5x12, getting a feel for the animal. All feedback welcome.

This image does a good job of utilizing the format. You are able to include the detail of the stonework in the foreground and at the same time show the scale and design of the viaduct in its surroundings. Like you said, it shows you are geting a feel for 5x12. Well seen.

Thanks guys for the compliments. It is an adjustment to shoot in this format - much moreso than going from say 4x5 to 5x7 or 8x10. You still think relatively square with those formats, even the 5x7. It was easier working back and forth from 35mm to the Xpan, even though the proportion differences are essentially the same from 5x7 to 5x12. It must be because of the size of the camera, and because the Xpan is held directly at your eye. Also, the 5x12 groundglass is just a little too big, lengthwise, to take in the whole field of view without scanning back and forth.

I've got another batch of shots I did yesterday that I have to D&P- I'll get to posting them sometime this week once I get some prints made. The latest batch are night shots around downtown DC, and I tried my first vertical with it as well. We'll see how well that works out.

Looks like a great shot.. you're going to have a ton of fun with that camera.

Taking the time to consider the whole of the gg when getting into panos and ULF is a challenge at first.

Jim- no doubt, especially when you're doing night shots with a Wollensak 159mm f12.5 lens!

Which, by the way, I just finished developing, and that little lens is pretty incredible- it covers 5x12 with some movement. Not the sharpest thing at the very edges, but some of that could also be due to tree movement from wind during 3-5 minute exposures.

I missed this great image before, but I like it. Nice panorama format as well. Do you still use this camera? Must be huge ...
