Recently a client of mine commissioned me to produce an image for them. They are doing an exhibition on the tragedies of life's past and one of my briefs was to produce an image of a Jewish person meeting their end during the holocaust.
A daunting brief being one of the the heaviest subjects known to mankind. this is the image i produced for the artist.
I was profoundly taken aback by this image, even in thumbnail form. I loved it befor I read the verbal expalnation. That is the true test of a photographer or an auther. Images should not reqire words, and visa vesa. I love how you gave more depth to the ear than to the rest of the image. Coupled with the concave ckeek, that is quite an impact.
Good work!

A difficult task, but this picture is something interesting. We have heard the phrase the "Glass Ceiling", but the here we see a bruising encounter with another form of glass, signifying subjection and elimination of Humanity. The exhalation from the subject is a visible metaphor for the pain from prejudice.
So, tell us about the collaborative process, if you could. What was "the artist's" role, and what was yours? It seems that if he's just commissioning you to put a concept into the form of an image that you're "the artist," and maybe he's "the producer" or something like that. In any case it sounds interesting.
artist approached me to produce a body of work they could show as their own. i asked what do you want me to shoot they gave me a list i named my price and away i went shooting. then this client will put their own spiel on the images I've made.
I simply don't like this image, yet am compelled to hang out with it long enough to find its story. Then leave feeling morose. The mark of a good concept I think. Nicely done!
without your words, I wouldnt know what this picture was about. And with the legend, I still cant really see how this is specifically about the holocaust. That may say more about me than the picture though. Technically, it almost looks like it's been done using a flatbed scanner ... the way the shallow dof is centred on the glass and fades out suddenly just aq few centimetres away - an interesting effect.
This is really strong work, Stephen! Claustrophobia, death, panic, lethal gas, and very very sad and gut-wrenching.
The smoke really helps in the understanding, but like Leon I also fail to see any symbolism that signifies 'Jewish' .
The holocaust should never be forgotten. Very well done!
