The Headless Hiker

Self-portrait, Troms, Norway, mid-August 1999.

This picture was taken at the end of a long, wet, cold day of hiking. This was my first hike where I brought the Rolleiflex, and obviously I still had some learning to do. Thing to like is how I ended up exactly chopping off my head.

I didn't bring a separate light meter in those days, because I didn't have one. Instead I used the meter built into my ugly old Rolleiflex 3.5F. Would not have worked with slide film, but TMY was ok.

I still remember what's in my left hand: two army-style biscuits with Dutch cheese in between. I was so hungry all the time, maybe that's why I remember.

I only have that cookie in my left hand because the right hand was needed for triggering the self timer. I only realized that just now- I never eat from my left hand.

No Gore-Tex or other fancy stuff for me in those days. This is one of those rain suits that block all moist, both rain and perspiration.
The shoes I wear aren't very fit for the work either.
Fond memories though.
