"The Dome" Egmont National Park New Zealand

"The Dome" Egmont National Park New Zealand

This is my first dark room print that I was happy with. I toned it using viradon toner for 10 min. I held back detail in the foreground by masking it while burning in detail in the sky and the dome. Will appreciate any comments to improve this print.

Ok...I am speechless... what in heavens name is this *hump*? It looks very interesting with the clouds (I assume this thing is very high) and eerie with the toning you've done. The foreground is just a tad bit too dark for me.

Sorry I got the name wrong. It\'s \"The Dome\" and agree with u on the foregound bit dark. It was ok before I toned it. But there is a peak in the same park called the Hump 1292m.

Wow Grade 4 and still too soft for my liking. I would recommend that for your film-dev combination you should increase exposure and development to get more general and local contrast (FP4 is flexible enough). Detail is also imperative on that largest of stones. I need to see how it really looks. Compositionally I would either get rid of the sky or wait until some interesting cloud formations happens by.

I have just checked my film and it was delta 400. Sorry about the mistake. I will try and do a reprint with lot more detail in the foreground.

Nice Bump/Hump/Dome. Especially impressed since we know it was your first darkroom print. Re contrast, how old was the paper? Overall great moody feeling to the image.
My only suggestion: this is a great subject, perhaps it would be worth taking a LF camera back to it
Would love to see more of your work Dharmendra.

I really like the sky as-is but then again I am a sucker for misty mystery - and the dark feel to the foreground and bump/hump/dome only serve to add to the feeling. This image isnt about a technically perfect and sharp recording of a scene, its about *your* interepretation of it, and, if your aim was to create an emotive and moody rendering of what you saw, you have been utterly successful.

thanks for sharing

Leon

ps - i really like like it.

Well done! This is a lovely moody, mysterious print.
Glad you made a correction on your film information, because I was wondering how you got FP4 to behave so 'grainily'.
Good luck with your darkroom work, and show us some more.

Thanks for your comments everyone. John regarding the age of the paper, I am estimating at least 10 yrs old as the person I bought the paper from didn\'t do any darkroom work for 10 yrs.
With regards to taking my large format tramping I am working on it. May be on my next trip
