I was surprised to see that it was Delta that you used - it has an almost infrared feel to it...
 
Composition is delightful. I had no clue Japan had canal towns. 'Confess I'd love to see the crisp take on it, but the scene serves the soft take also. Your use of the foreground grass is wonderful & instructional for me.
 
My comment was basically a homage to Brett Weston who said something like Who needs a stinkin lightmeter, what would happen if it broke.

I think this image really tells a story.
