This is an incredible picture. I absolutely love the unusual background of mountains and clouds combined with the gulls, usually you just see sky in these pictures. The sense of depth and "being there" is enormous in the picture. How close must that gull have been with a 20mm lens...???
If I were you, I'd try high resolution scanning it and correcting the scratch in Photoshop. There are shops that can than recreate a new negative for you based on that repaired image, or you might consider the hybrid approach of a large contact neg if you have good black/white printer.
I'm not usually one for animals and birds, but I love everything about this photo. Each seagull is perfectly positioned, each is lit differently and perfectly for what's behind them, and the clouds on the mountain top round it off for me.
It's such a shame the neg is damaged. I hope you can find a way to deal with that because this is so good. Very, very well done.
I love the perspective also. The birds do look very close and the closest one looks like he means business. I would be ducking and never get the shot as I am skitish about birds flying too close to me.
Beautiful ! The tones are very pleasing and grain is here, for Tri-X, very smooth. Damage of negative is Murphy's law. The best is damaged, if any. I would consider only one more thing, even if the birds in low part have also very nice shapes and positions, I think, you can try to crop the village contour in lower part. It distracts a bit. Just my opinion. Anyway, the shot is beautiful, as said. r.
this image is wonderful...wispy and fully of action and drama...you will have no problem(and should) dealing with the injured negative ...this is a keeper...
