During the time it took for the port of Cherbourg to be captured in 1944, an artificial port was built off Gold beach at Arromanches. Another was built off Omaha beach, at St Laurent, but was destroyed in a storm and abandoned. This remaining port beacame one of the busiest ports in the world for a few months as supplies were unloaded by the allies for their advance to Paris. These few concrete piers are all that remain.
