Testing 120 Rollie Pan 25 in XTol

I wanted to check out the film speed, grain and latitude of this film by challenging it with a high contrast scene. I used an incident meter reading at ISO 25.

The published speed in XTol looks fine and the grain is nearly invisible at 100% (Coolscan 9000). My development time in this case (XTol 1+2, 8:11 at 71.5 F) was just a little long. Next time I will try about 15% less development.

I think this is a great film although it seems not to handle the extreme highlights. Softer development can be compensated for with a #3 or #4 paper.

The only downside is the strong curl of the negative. I had to use a glass carrier.

You might ask, since the grain is so fine, why not dilute Rodinal and use compensating development? Since this is roll film and not all frames would need it, I am looking for a process that is easier to control in a small tank at typical Florida temperatures. It just happened that we were going through some cold weather. I normally develop at 75 F.

Regardless of the film and exposure, it seems north Florida light (I'm new to Jax) is just too brilliant and contrasty. I've been waiting for some fog, and that should help, but in the meantime I'm having trouble with views away from the beaches. Where on BTI is this? I was thinking about going there soon at low tide. Nicely done, here...love the water's clarity.

South Florida can be even more harsh. The other problem is that vegetation is so dense it's hard to isolate anything. I took the photo near the boat ramp at the far north end of the island. There is also some interesting driftwood nearby along the east shore.
