Thanks for your advice, I'm going to start using reflectors and maybe look into some artificial lighting for fill. But I'm going to start with a reflector first.
 
I would suggest a reflector, be it a white card or a white sheet is the most useful item for any photography where you wish to control lighting. Perhaps even more important than lighting itself.
 
Most of the photo retailers in your area (Calumet, Gassers (although why bother- they're overpriced with attitudes to match!), Keeble & Schuchat) carry these multi-surface reflector kits - they're a collapsible round disc of translucent fabric you can use as a diffuser, or zip on your choice of reflective white, silver, silver/gold, gold, or black covers to use as reflectors/subtractors (in the case of the black, to boost shadow contrast in a very bright, reflective environment).
