Tasting Salt (MSA - March 2014)

This is my contribution to the MSA of March 2014 with as a theme: "SALT". This print is made with the alt-photo process of "Salt Printing" on aquarel paper. I scanned my original photo and made a special digital inter-negative for theis printing process.
Salt printing is an old process technique from 1833, whereby paper is treated with a solution of salt and silver nitrate and then subjected to outdoor exposure (sunlight) or an indoor UV lamp. I used a lamp this time. I love this process for its simplicity and beauty of the prints.

##edit May 12th, 2014: I withdraw this image from the MSA, for I used a digital internegative. That isn't allowed and I should have know that. See my comment below. Sorry, Bert##

BTW: the streaks on the right side of the nose (upper right corner) are from uneven coating of the aquarel paper with a brush, to make the paper light sensitive before exposing it with a negative (sandwich as a contact print).

Nice! It would be great even if it wasn't an alternative print ...

Salt print, or salt lick? Very nice, well done!!

A perfect print! Is there a short step-by-step working method on the web?

Hi Bertus, I have a better option. Follow a weekend course in Middelburg, like I did (and will do again). PM me for info, if you like. There is also info on: http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes (scroll down tot the Salt Print section). If you want to know more, we could meet up, have some coffee and shoot some film someday? Greetings from Bert (from Apeldoorn)

Thanks for the link!

EDIT ON MAY 12TH: I'm withdrawing this image from the MSA, since I learned I violated the APUG gallery upload rules, as posted here: http://www.apug.org/gallery1/upload.php . Using a digital internegative is not allowed (as it absolutely right) but somehow I missed that. My sincere apologies for that. It is a fine print - still - but not fitting the APUG standards. My mistake. And don't worry: this doesn't discourage me in any way. If at all, it encourages me to go even more analogue at the MSA next time. New standards for me to meet in alt-photo printing, so to say. It's always good to be reminded of the primary settings of the forum, now and again. We too easily drift off into the digital abyss....
