Very interesting subject but believe it could be alot sharper. Get yourself Barry Thorntons book "The Edge of Darkness" it will be the best money you ever spent and you will see the difference that a sharp print makes. Read the book and rework the subject.
Hi all,
thanks for commenting. In deed there exists a pcture somewhat more centered on the knotted branches. I'd much like to show this too. I am not familiar with the gallerie system so I don't kow if I can delete one version later on without loosing the comments on it.
As for the sharpness: The look of the jpeg seems to show more of the properties of my scanner (Agfa Arcus 1200) and of my scanning skills (these are my first) than it shows the properties of the print. In fact, all my pictures are taken from a tripod when I use the SL66 as it is impossible to use freehand.
BTW the negative is HP5+ not Delta400 as I first reported.
First, I love this shot ... but I can't help join in critiquing it. It's always more interesting to criticise a photo you like, trying to achieve perfection.
Now, are we looking down a little bit toward the base of the tree? I think perhaps a straight-on shot with a wide angle lens would be more pleasing - wide angle only so that you can get close enough for this kind of definition, not for any distortion. With the 80mm, maybe you could lower the camera and get it closer to straight on and still get it ... maybe not, that would explain your angle
As far as cropping goes, maybe there should be an equal distance above and below the central knotted area in the middle.
