wow keith this is something else, i bet it sings in person!
i love the photograph, and the edge treatment ( looking like the subject ! )
is just a beautiful continuation of the main subject ..
what is clayboard? a slab of clay you made special for the photograph ?
Thanks John, I appreciate it. I am continuing with this for sure.
This is quite bizarre what I made, I must say. I keep looking at it trying to figure out why it seems so much more three dimensional than my paper prints of the same neg (granted those are on fairly textured kozo). Perhaps it's because the claybord surface is so smooth, or maybe the sharp lines of the film-edge area looks kind of windowlike and are somehow associating with the sharp front edges of the swarf, and the out of focus areas seem to go behind the board... ???! Or perhaps there were too many poppies on my bagel. In any case, everyone who's seen it thinks it's unusually three dimensional.
"Claybord" is an Ampersand product you can get in many arts stores, watercolor painters use it. It's a very rigid, stable surface. Basically it's like pressed board with some kind of clay material deposited on it. It's amazingly efficient with Pt/Pd, I only need about 6 drops of fluid... total... to coat a ~4x10" area. And with no prewetting
It really has a 3D look. I wonder is it glazed clay or has it any transparent film on it? if so that could cause this 3D depth... anyway beautiful work!
Thanks. The clay is, as far as I know, kaolin. I guess they bind it and deposit kaolin powder on the board and then sand it to a very smooth finish. In person, it looks like unglazed porcelain. I will probably put sandarac or something over it after it's toned.
I highly recommend getting some claybord and playing with it- should be great for cyanos and such as well.
