hand head more than likly. need to know your settings. this photograph would have worked much better with everything in focus and buring in the upper right corner. over all tones seem to be washed out. Like the comp. I would try it again and see about stopping down to the max and adjust the speed . If you can't do to keeping the water sharp then you may want to go to a wider angle lens that will give you more depth of field at a more opened F/ stop.
I believe Michael is talking about the tonality and the lack of depth of field and sharp detail in the sand and water area....I agree with Michael....composition is nice....stopping down will give you a greater depth....If shutter is then too slow...use tripod, sand area will be sharp and water might have a nice milky focused motion.
I find my self in the oposite corner, For me the shorter depth of field is plus in this image. After looking for a bit at the forground your eye begins to wander about the frame looking for a place to rest, the softness in the sand and waters edge gently push your eye back to what is the main point in the photo, the driftwood. To me it is an excellent composition, great use of depth of field and a very well conceived and executed image.
Charles, thanks. You summed up my intentions perfectly. As for whether one prefers it, that's always a crapshoot. I can tell you, as a not so disinterested observer, I found the counterpoint and interplay of similarly-shaped but otherwise different elements to be what, for me at least, separates the photo as you see it from a straight documentation of reality. Again, whether separates amounts to elevates is for others to decide.
