Sungai Cikapundung flows north-south, bisecting the central city section and joining other tributaries before eventually emptying into Waduk Saguling, west of Bandung.
Prior to rapid industrialization in the 1980s, the Citarum river basin was suitable for fishing, bathing, and swimming while also contributing to consistent irrigation for strong rice harvests. These days harvest yields have dropped sharply and rice shortages frequently occur.
The reservoir, primarily used as a water basin for the 700 MW Saguling hydro-electric power plant and associated rivers is now suffering from heavy pollution by uncontrolled dumping from textile factories, domestic, and agricultural waste. As recently as 2005, waste inflow has become critical enough to cause serious damage to the power plant turbine and cooling systems - in addition to the continual destruction of the surrounding agricultural and aquatic environments.
