Looked to me like he was flipping the double-barreled-birdie to the desert. Guess they all look like that.

Looks to me like a stuffed and stitched toy! Especially the cobbled stitching on his left arm. But I really like the effect of the Kodalith with this one.
 
It's really a weird effect, like it was shot with a flash and some sort of backdrop. But what it was, half the exposure on the paper, maybe 60s, was through a crappy vinyl record sleeve, and the needles on that left side were blurred into a shadow.
 
Looks like you laid the cactus down on a piece of paper and shot it with flash. What an unusual effect you've created...I really like it.
