Stump

4x10 silver contact print

Part of my ongoing Campbell's Farm series, this one is part of my backyard. I saw Miles just posted a pine stump from his back yard so I thought posting this was timely.

Shawn;

This is a really great photo. All the shapes and tones are very complementary. The composition is alive.

I have noticed that when I use Ansco 130 my prints have a heavy green tone. Then again i am using a different paper and the Adams Ansco.

Good work.

Hey Shawn, very well done ...nice shapes and textures that give some mystery...

Thanks everyone. When the back porch is closed in this is where I stand and smoke a pipe or cigar in the evening. There is a nice view of a pond and hilly treeline beyond. I always thought I should be able to make a picture here and I'm glad I did. Thanks again. Shawn

Chris,
I don't use Ansel's mix, I use the PF version. I haven't noticed a harsh green, only slight, and it seems to change with a 4 minute KRST toning at 1:100. I believe you are using the Emaks paper, with which I have no experience. Have you tried toning? Best. Shawn

This is what photography is about for me -isolating and elevating the unappreciated or unnoticed to the level of art through the (near) mastery of some technical tools and a well developed vision.

Thanks so much, Vic. I always enjoy your posts so it truly means something to me. I have a very similar feeling about what photography is to me... at least the best photography. Thanks again! Shawn

Doc, I am glad you said that you stand there in the evening for two reasons 1: it brings home the fact that some of the best photographs are made when the subject is very familiar and 2: I don't feel so guilty about smoking.

Really though, this is a great picture. It seems to evoke, contain and sum up so much feeling- even contadictory feelings.

really good work.

wait there's more . . . Do you think it seems a little small? Like maybe you should get a 7x17? But I couldn't say for sure without the print in my hands.

BEST,
Richard

Thanks Rich. Yeah, I felt like I should be able to make a picture here, kinda of a test of vision thing. It definately holds many feelings and memories for me...

I don't see a bigger format in my future. I'm really into the intimacy and jewel like qualities of the these smaller prints - 4x5, 4x10, even the 8x10. And having them all in one camera is unbeatable for me. Looking at the groundglass you're seeing the final size so I feel that I compose accordingly, I doubt I would make the same picture on a larger format with an equivilant lens. Of course if I ever fell into a 7x17 I'd probably give it a whirl. A short one, maybe one portfolio or so, nothing long term. Thanks again, Rich. Doc
