I demand that you give me this car (because it is so ugly). Even in the 50s I thought it was ugly and, at that age, did not have much of a point of reference. Studebaker died a final death. - David Lyga
My granddad worked for Studebaker and my uncle, who lived in Mishawaka, In., own them all. My father drove Chevy's and had nothing good to say about Studebaker or Nash, which were my uncle Ray's favorite cars. We would get together three or four times a year and it was fun as a kid to listen to those two go around about cars while playing Pedro. At that time in my life I never thought my father to be right about very much, but he sure was right about cars. JohnW
In an interview with Andy Granatelli years ago he was asked what killed Studebaker off. His answer was the labor unions priced them out of the market. I'd say designs like this might have had a lot to do with it.
I use to refer to these units as spaceships. I could not tell the front from the back half the time.......

Andy might have been a heck of a race car driver, but his assessment of Studebakers demise is not entirely accurate. Sure, companies can make more money by paying their employees less money, but those same labor unions were in almost all other auto corporations and most of them made it. You build a better mouse trap and people will beat a path to your door. Studebaker build a poor mouse trap! Studebaker had features in their cars that the "Big Three" didn't. Unfortunately they put them in an unreliable car. They just could not compete with the likes of GM and Ford. George Romney's American motors aka Nash was in the same boat. Just the way it goes I guess. I still wish I would have bought a Studebaker Avanti when I had the chance. At least they were smart enough to put a 327cu.in. Chevy engine in that one, but alas it was to late. JohnW
I forgot to mention that the same guy who designed the Studebaker cars also designed Flash Gordon's space ship. If there is anyone out there that is still alive to remember watching Flash Gordon on a six inch TV screen. JohnW
