Stornoway

Stornoway

As a teenager I used to hear a certain radio show late in the evening (Jazz and Blues). I had to be in bed already. Before the show began I heard the rather longish maritime weather report which I hear now, when I am out sailing in the baltic.
Part of this weather report are station reports with temperature, humidity, Wind and the like from places all over northern europe. The places had exotic names like Tyboroen, Stavanger, Tynemouth, Den Helder and so forth and I alway wondered where all these places are and what they are like.

Beeing over 50 now one day the thought came up that when I really want to find out in this life I'd better go and have a look and of cause take home at least one picture of each place. So this year I had Stornoway, Tynemouth and Den Helder on my list.

Unfortunately being photogenic was obviously not the most important criterion for choosing these places for the station reports. Besides Stornoway we have been in Tynemouth but skipped Den Helder. I could not expect my partner to go there too.

It is not my goal to take pictures which people would expect typical for the respective place (there are lots on flicr already :D ). The project is solely about me and what made me impressed about the place. In Stornoway it was this part of the park and the light there. We came there by chance. we had to walk our dog before boarding the ferry back to Ullapool.

I think these organic methods of going back through memory of ages past are really a fabulous way of exploring subjects to photograph. Thanks for sharing the story, it really lends itself to the image.

Well thought out concept for your series, and this picture is just wonderful. I love the feel of space in it, enhanced by the trees slowly disappearing in the strongly lit background.

Martin,

what is a Shipping Forecast? May be it is the same as the weather report I mean. In German it is called Seewetterbericht. May be Shipping Forecasts are the announcements of homecoming ships on the radio which I remember from my childhood too. These were important for for the families as at that time there were no satelite telephones to call them up to announce their arrival back.

Ulrich

All right, I found out already. The shipping forecasts are the weather forecasts for the sea regions like Viking, Fisher, Utsira, Dogger and such. These are part of the German Seewetterbericht too.

Great Idea, excellent photo.

The trees look like sentinels, guarding the park from something. Probably your dog.
