Cass Tech High School, Detroit, Michigan. Now to be fair there is a state of the art Cass Tech High School right next to this one, and they planned to knock this one down, but an Alumni group got together and stopped them. Now it's frozen in time.
James, if you really want to know what I think, I'll give it up. I actually studied it for quite a while.
The flat printing leaves me drawn to no particular object in the frame. There is no good solid black to anchor the picture anywhere. I find my eye wandering through the frame, looking for something to latch on to, but I keep aimlessly wandering.
The brightest point in the frame is the open window and the fairly uneventful scene displayed outside. So I find my eyes basically drawn to what looks like the roof of any commercial building out there.
I think you need to re-focus your effort and try again in order to catch my attention. Think long and hard what the picture is about, what's most important about it, eliminate the rest, and then show us what you found important. It can be as simple as burning in select areas and adding some visual impact by working with contrast.
Thanks Tom! My hope was that the leading lines of the desks and in the ceiling would take you directly to the "Stoned" and that the verticles on the windows would help keep you there. I'll admit I was leaning heavily on shape, not value, to direct one's eye. To hopefully help this I softened and burnt the corners. Apparently, this wasn't as effective as I had hoped. Much appreciated feedback though.
