Still Life Study

Still Life Study

Part of a challenge from my father, a Cultural Anthropologist/Literature Professor, who threw down the parental gauntlet that my photography needed to think as well as see. The challenge then was to do a series of still lifes on metaphor for life as I see it, combined one verse of words to accompany. Here's the first in the series;

In between the choices that bind us
and the release that frees us
lies the chance to forgive ourselves
Location
Asheville, NC
Equipment Used
10 x 12 Camera
Exposure
25 seconds on dark overcast day
Film & Developer
Wet Plate Collodion
Paper & Developer
Red Ruby Glass
This is beyond description for me. It is a very successful shot, because I now have to go philosophize and come back to it. Very thought provocative!

Sorry,

In this case
words are stronger
then the image
For my
untrained eye

Like your skill

but not the conext
of the image

Love the words
But then again...
somehow they take me
in a different place

You bring yourself
I bring myself
Just my thoughts...

hi monty

the red, verse and imagery are really intense, and
from the thumbnail, the image almost looks like
it is torn ... the words, visual image and
process work really well together.

i look forward to the rest of your series!

OK, see if I'm on the right track...

Rope - "In between the choices that bind us"
Death (skull) - "and the release that frees us"
Faith (cross) - "lies the chance to forgive ourselves"

Am I getting warm? I've tried researching the symbolism, but I wasn't getting far with the skull. This still fascinates me.

A great image, like everything about it. My thoughts run along with Thomas B, however I am unsure exactly how to interpret what it's message truly was/is to yourself. I know that I will come back to the image many times before I will feel secure about what it says to me.

Charlie..........................

Thomas and Charlie,

You nailed it. Can you tell I have a 7 and 4 year old that are taking on all my impatient, onery ways!! I think I liked it better when you could explain yourself away with the thought that you had more future than past! Anyway the image's well spring run to a long alcohol induced discussion with me pops about reconciling ones self with cultural expectation--in this case how it pertains to fatherhood and the role our choices play on the well being and development of those precious souls we are in charge of molding.

Thanks for taking the time to think about it.

best,

Monty
