St Mary's

St Mary's

Just a local church which I like to photograph n ow and then. The last time visited there were these great cloud formations radiating out from behind the church. I also like the way this print makes the building look really 'solid' and heavily planted on the earth. I figured it was worth a shot or two! Please note in the print the roof on the tower is not quite so bright, it's my damned scanner, it won't just scan what it sees, but instead messes around with the brightness etc. :(

Lovely pic, great clouds...dont you just think Pan F is a great film?! I have a similar problem with my scanner it just fails to do justice to the original print :-(

I really like the clouds on this one.

In the thumbnail, the buttresses on the tower give the feeling like the picture would look like it was "falling backwards". I.e. it looks like it was shot with a wide angle lens and that the camera back wasn't parallel to the building. I was glad to see that the image itself looks so good.

The clouds are what make the picture different. Do you have any others taken either closer, or lower, that do not show the foliage above the roof in the background? I ask this as I also take a few churches like this and have at times done both versions with and without treetops just clearing the back of the roof ridge. Some look better with, others without. Mick.

John, I love Pan F it's great for shots with lots of detail!
Matt, thanks, it was a wide lens (28mm), and yes it was difficult to get the camera level, get the whole building in. Fortunately the butresses disguise any backward lean!
Mick, I'll check the negs, I remember it was difficult to get the angle i wanted and also eliminate the tree you mention. I chose this neg because in the others the grave in the foreground is cut off at the base and doesn't look right.

Punchy. The sky looks like the beginning of the Northern Lights. There's something about churches in England that lend themselves to great photos. I have visited the 3 countries on the U.K. mainland and for churches nothing matches England especially the county I live in, Northamptonshire.

The sky makes this shot! very nice, very eery...
