Guillaume, thanks. The branches in the foreground are completely black. The rest of the scene is obscured by snow in the air, which is what gives it the 'light' tones.
Title changed, Marco.
Nicely done Thomas. I to echo what Guillaume said about needing just a tad more punch with some blacks or at least to seperate the mid tones a bit more... Unless you were after the more muted tone look, then in which case I'll hush my piehole
OK, I'll come clear. I'm trying a new way of printing. This picture to me was all about mid-tones, with snow flying through the air I didn't want an edgy look to it. There is pure white and pure black in the print, just not where everybody would expect it.
The branches in the foreground are pitch black, and some of the snow in the distant is pure paper white. I did print at a very low grade with a negative that is of fairly normal contrast. Basically this is how the scene looked as I beheld it. There is snow in the air. When I increase the contrast the snow flakes in the air become more apparent, and I chose not to show that.
So that's that. I'll continue to experiment. Thank you for the feedback, folks.
The power plant is indeed hydro power. The water falls at St Anthony are the tallest on the Mississippi River at 30 ft. I believe the smoke stacks are a steam generating plant for city heating.
I'm trying very hard with my comments not to seem passive aggressive, although when I read back at my last comment I realize it might have sounded like that a little bit.
I'm just trying to have an open mind about what I'm doing with my printing.
Thanks again, I wholeheartedly appreciate your honest comments.
Thomas, I have been experimenting with rather divergent tonalities in my photographs for the last year or so... One thing I don't want is to get stuck in a rut where all my photographs have exactly the same tonality. A photograph with a vast array or grays can have every bit the impact of something with more brilliant contrast. You're always experimenting and learning and I have the utmost respect for that.
