How do you judge the exposure?

I don't know how to judge the exposure - I've just been lucky, I guess. The first one I left for four hours and it was pretty dark. These, at 2 1/2 hours seem pretty good.
I have no way of knowing how much UV light is available at any given time, and old paper certainly is variable. Just have to try some I guess.
