Spring Growth, Kiskiminetas Valley

4x5 silver contact print

Made this weekend while exploring a new to me section of the Roaring Run Recreation Area.

I managed to scratch my better developed negative (I always expose 2) so I had to print this thing up at Grade 5 to get to a full scale. (Those little plants in the bottom right are jet black on the print.) I might selenium tone the negative and give it another go but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks, Michael. I'm not sure exactly... anytime I have to go all the way up to grade 5 I get a little nervous... feeling like I didn't leave myself enough options. I'm pretty happy with the print overall, though... so I should probably just live with it for awhile.

Beautiful.

Soft spring foliage is one of my favourite subjects and I think you have done a lovely job. The little black plants make the otherwise soft contrast really work and in my opinion, you have really captured the essence of that kind of scene.

It's quite nice as it is, but I could imagine it even lighter....very high key and ethereal. Might be worth a try. Les Maclean suggested I do that once with a fairly similar negative, and I really liked the effect. The imperative of always rendering a full range of tones limits the imagination and creative impulse to try something different.

A very good point and perhaps worth experimentation.

Thanks fellows! It was the smattering of 'little black plants' (I've gotta find out what those things are called) in front of the lighter tonalities which really attracted me to the scene. john, I appreciate that sentiment. It is something I struggle with, fighting the urge to make everything fit within a certain range. I actually thought about your work when I was printing this, thinking it had a certain 'jovo' quality.

It's quite nice Shawn... very delicate and beautiful.

I would live with it... it looks great on my screen! You take a chance with your only neg getting it wet again.

If you're talking about the black things at the tips of the branches of the foreground plants, I'm pretty sure that's either Staghorn Sumac or Woody Sumac.
