Neither look like people in the first flush of youth. In fact both look like two middle-aged people who were once or still are married but not to each other.
In the long shadows of what seems like a deserted area they are walking back to their "other lives" wondering what the future holds for their present relationship and the relationships with others that has existed for much longer
I wonder what subsequently happened? They are now nearly 40 years older and if still alive both in their 80s and now look like people who could never been in such a situation as we see in front of us
Old people are mostly one dimensional to anyone more than a few years their junior and have always been old except to their contemporaries.
When there is no-one left who can truly share your memories you are finally alone. No matter how well everything is, both mentally and physically you are in solitary confinement - a terrible situation to be in.
This is a sidewalk on the edge of Lincoln Park Zoo, in Chicago. There are many businesses near, so I imagine they are leaving work. The time was afternoon, and they appear not to be dressed for typical park activities. My best guess is that they met in the afternoon for a stroll together before going home. A moment stolen from the day, a chance to be together, but on view for all.
