Snowpocalypse 2013

Finally got around to developing the first roll from the crazy snowstorm we had. This Particular image comes from one of the 3 Panatomic X rolls I have, and probably will ever shoot. I REALLY like this film, sometimes people talk about a film like plus x, which I like but don't find fantastic, where this film I find really nice. I think I just tend to like slow ASA films which is why I enjoy PanF+ so much, ok now I'm just babbling. I developed this in Ilfsol 3 but the last remaining roll I'll soup in HC-110 (B) so as to have something to compare, if I had another roll I'd also try DD-X but I don't, so I'd prefer to use something that the box recommends for the film as a contrast and see how different it is.

I wasn't happy with any images on the first two rolls, save this one which really isn't all that good either and looks much better LARGE, hopefully tomorrow I'll have more done and those will be better.

  1. Yes
Very nice shot, including how you captured detail in the houses by avoiding underexposure. I'd like to know how you metered for this shot.

I too really like it. Nice and sharp and it captured the story of the snowstorm. Well done!

I can't recall exactly as I went through 6 rolls that day, but I used my spotmeter and for scenes like this I tend to meter for the sides of the houses and look for a neutral grey house or some color that's kind of in the middle then take the measure if the bright side and then the darker side (but close to the edge where it's brighter) and average the two exposures, so that's probably what I did. Or I may have taken the tree and the shadow of the tree and averages those two but I can't be sure, probably the house one.

Oh and some I have no enlarger I scan, I use the Epson software, I don't really understand a lot about adjustment, except I hit the histogram and there are automatic points if black at 10 and white at 200 and I always move the black to 8, I find in Chrimes sometimes 6, because they have a brown tone and it makes the brown go black in the shadows which is how it should be, and the B&W to 8 because if similar reasons it pushes the true black to black instead of grey. Sometimes if a shot is under exposed slightly Iove the white from 200 to 210 or 220 but mostly it's fine, like this shot I didn't do anything. Hope that helps.

Hate to break up the fun here, but you do know that Kodak no longer makes Panatomic X, don't you? You may be able to find some on eBay at high prices, but that may be about the only available in the whole world. So sorry. You might try Ilford's Pan F version of this low speed film for a similar look and feel. Logan

Yes I'm aware, I said so in my description that PanF+ is my favorite and Panatomic-X has been gone for a long time, I estimate these rolls are from the 80's old and still brilliant.
