snake charmer

snake charmer

This is a print from a batch of negatives taken by my grandfather when he served in the British army in India in 1917. I printed it straight with no dodging or burning. Just think -no film speed, no lightmeter. The film format is 2.5X5 inches. The only reason I know that it is 1917 is one of the negs has a sign with the date on it.

Note the guy on the left in the pith helmet. What is he doing with his pants? The term "trouser snake" comes to mind....
It's not very clear on the scan, but it looks like those are real cobras in the two baskets on the left.

I see at least a couple of snakes coming out of the baskets on the left, and another around the neck and shoulders of a gentleman on the right. I would guess the on-lookers would be hoping the snake-charmer didn't run out of breath.
