What a brilliant image. Have you noticed how the smile on the phone is echoed in the geometry of the background.

Fantastic! I tend to just sigh and move on when people are staring at their phones...this is a good reminder to continue to observe

Why? Its part of present culture. If you ignore the here and now then your not representing the times. In fifty years time people will be nostalgic about these times as they are.
Sure, but I have only one picture in which a sitting figure with a curved back staring at his phone works. The point is that I see it all the time and I find it to be a boring subject. I much rather shoot someone walking...without a phone But it presents a creative challenge, for sure!

Taking photos of boring subjects and making them interesting is what it's all about. Seventy years ago people sitting around reading newspapers would of been considered every day boring stuff. Now it's fascinating. In 30 years time people would of moved on from smart phones to something else. Those in the future will be more interested in well composed pictures like Colins than something that could come from any time.

I have to say I'm often guilty of not thinking about taking a picture when it comes to people staring at their phones. This one I couldn't resist because A, I was out with the gal in the photo so I was a captive audience and B, the smiley face on the screen was just too good to resist.
I didn't think about the symmetry between the shapes of the smiley face and the background sculpture at the moment but fairly quickly I did...I made a few frames of this and this one was the image that best showed it.
