Smashin Off I

Nat, the subject is in the band 'Smashin-Off' - have a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF2xqusQiWQ and watch them play 'Death Rides a Horse' among others - I'll be touring with next week as pseudo-official photographer, looking forward to it. This is a final print of sorts (will there ever be a final print...) - Pt/Pd 8x10 with a large white border of 11x14 paper (you cant see that here though). Two Lowell Totas used (lots of flagging) and a little flash to punch up the exposure/contrast from the background (%50 in my light meter).

I like your approach of using "slow photography" when facing this band and their intense type of music. This "down to earth"-type of portraits will suit the project perfectly.

thanks! I'd like to take the 8x10 and have a small lighting set up similar to this and set up back stage and take portraits just after they have performed (this band and hopefully others) ...

Might be a bit hard logistically as backstage in many venues is a small area filled with people and alcohol - Might wait until i build my 8x10/11x14 beater cam for that to save the Sinar from a burial in beer and cigarettes...

That being said I am shooting another band tomorrow, setting up in their rehearsal space, getting them to sit during/just after playing - so the aesthetic of this kind of portrait is there but energy wise it will be different. Could be interesting...

I will be shooting 6x7 120 on the tour though - no fancy pants platinum

I love this series of images. Great work Nick.
