Sinister Idyll - Southwest Waterfront

Today this is a peaceful marina sheltering pleasure boats. In 1848, it was a working pier. 77 African-Americans boarded the Pearl there in an attempt to sail to freedom. They were caught and returned. This incident led to the legal end of the slave trade in DC, and the writing of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
