This statue, at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire, UK , is of Private Herburt Burden,
1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was executed at Ypres in 1915 at the age of 17. 305 others were "Shot At Dawn" during the The Great War (1914-18) for offences such as cowardice and desertion. Behind the statue are 306 stakes with the names of all who suffered the same fate as Private Burden, he included. This week the British Government has deceided to pardon all 306 of these servicemen, after a long campaign by their families.
I heard someone say a while ago after the accusation of shell shock was made, "maybe they were the sane ones, they ran away".
